Wondering how to choose the best Pocket Spring Mattress? In this article, we delve a little deeper to help you understand whether a Pocket Spring Mattress is the right option for you.

Pocket Spring Mattress - No more partner disturbance

Purchasing a mattress is a relatively serious commitment. Considering that you’re investing in 10 to 15 years of quality sleep, it’s essential to know what’s inside the mattress you’re buying to benefit your body the most.

Essentially a mattress contains two functional components - the support component, and the comfort component.  Each component can be made of one or various materials, and occasionally there are mattresses where the same material is used for both support and comfort (for example, latex mattresses).

Your choice of mattress components should be made based on the following:

  • How you feel when you lie on the mattress
  • How long you want the mattress to last
  • Whether you’re disturbed by your partner’s movements at night
  • You have a specific need (e.g. Pressure and pain relief)

Mattress Support Components

These are used to make your mattress supportive and to promote neutral spinal alignment, such as Latex, pocket-coils, foam, innerspring and sometimes a combination of a few.

Mattress Comfort Components

These are used to make your mattress comfortable and to change the firmness and feel, e.g.  Dacron, foams, latex, visco-elastic memory foam, wool, gel and even water.

Pocket Spring Mattresses

Pocket spring mattresses (also known as pocket coil mattresses) are extremely popular today. With so many available on the market, it’s essential to understand how they are made so that you can make an informed choice.

Pocket Spring (Pocket Coil) Mattresses: How They are Made

Pocket spring units consist of a group of tempered steel coils that have been individually inserted and sealed into a durable material pocket or sock. Each pocket is then fused to its neighbour until a large rectangle of pocketed springs results. This unit forms the backbone of a pocket coil mattress.

Many of these units today also feature multiple different zones of coils/springs.

  • The springs towards the feet of the sleeper are made of responsive firmer gauge wire, which compresses with mild to moderate force.
  • The springs in the centre of the mattress, where the most support is needed over hips and lower back, may be firmer of softer depending on the manufacturers objectives.
  • The springs around the head and shoulders of the sleeper are generally made of the firmer wire, the same or similar to the feet.
  • Manufacturers may insert multiple zones in addition to the above for example in a 5 zone pocket spring often a zone surrounding the shoulders will be similar in gauge to the hips to allow ones shoulders to be gently contoured by the springs

Some manufacturers will manufacture mattresses using up to 9 zones within their pocket springs; however, we don’t believe there is any research to indicate which is a better configuration.

How a Pocket Spring Mattress Feels

Pocket spring or coil mattresses redefine the old-fashioned ‘inner spring’ bed. Since each coil/spring is isolated from its neighbour, the mattress effectively has independent suspension, which means the springs last longer and more importantly, partner disturbance is almost entirely eliminated – making it a terrific choice for restless sleepers – or their partners!

They are far more advanced, and technologically far superior to standard innerspring mattresses. Pocket Spring Mattresses may not be as durable as old style innerspring mattresses. However, Twin Pocket Spring Mattresses, which have one spring within the other acting as a shock absorber, are more durable and can carry more weight. The same can be said about the Pocket On Pocket Spring, where one set of springs sits on the other.

  • Light – weight
  • Very cool
  • Do not need to be turned

Pocket Coil Mattresses: Facts and Fables

  • Not all pocket coils are the same, so when you’re looking to buy a pocket spring mattress, it is essential to try the mattress for a minimum of 20 - 30 minutes beforehand, to make sure it’s right for your body size and requirements.
  • A well-made pocket coil mattress offers the most comfortable feel within a spring mattress as it is only depressed where the weight is situated, providing for a body contouring/conforming feel.
  • There’s much talk in the mattress industry about the “best pocket spring mattresses”, often boasting the number of pocket coils per mattress. Don’t be fooled into thinking “the more – the better” when it comes to this type of mattress.
  • All our mattresses have a high numbers of coils (see technical specifications on each product), however, the higher the number of coils, the smaller each individual spring needs to be since the area inside the mattress remains the same.

The benefits of pocket coil mattresses are many – which is why they are  popular on the market today. Not all Pocket Spring Mattresses are of the same quality - its imperative that you only buy from companies that have multiple types of Pocket Spring Mattresses on display from multiple manufacturers.
